Sometimes at sessions moms get anxious about how their toddler is behaving and whether they are going to get any good images. I am here today to assure you that even the busiest, sassiest or most tired toddlers will be just fine at your session. The beauty of lifestyle photography is finding those moments between poses, or instead of poses! When toddlers are adjusting to a new baby, things are bound to get a little questionable, but don’t worry about how it will photograph. Mama, just relax and let me do the hard work!

Now, I am not saying this because this family was difficult – because they weren’t! I just know that Jess was apprehensive about how both kids were and whether there would be any good images that resulted from the session. I have to say that 90% of my clients feel this way about their session no matter the age of the kids! Need any more proof? Those real moments between poses are where the best shots come from, so just relax and do your parenting thing! I’ve got this!

I love getting to meet new families through this business! Victoria was one of my first clients to find me organically on google (yay for hard work blogging finally paying off!). In-home newborn sessions are becoming a bit of a specialty of mine. I absolutely love the slow pace, the easy conversation and the comfort of shooting in my clients home. It allows everyone the space and freedom to move around, take a break or play. The whole session is entirely family focused and led, meaning when baby needs to eat we take a break. Kids (and Dads) are generally more comfortable at home, which lets me get to know them better and photograph them at a deeper level. Plus, I love getting home tours by 4 year olds – don’t worry Moms, my basement is just as messy as yours!

Last summer I had the pleasure of photographing little Nate and his family in their home. The session was relaxed and fun, and it even included some of their favourite little poultry friends! I have been telling Eric no for years about getting chickens, but after seeing Ryan & Lyndsay’s yard I started to consider it. We haven’t taken the leap yet, but maybe this Spring..

Those first few weeks at home with a new baby, especially your first, are such a blur. You are trying to get to know your new baby and keep them happy and healthy, all while navigating a change in yourself and your relationship with your partner. Needless to say, it can be a stressful time. But what I love most about in-home newborn sessions is that you get the opportunity to slow down a bit and be together. Although the reason you booked the session is the arrival of the new baby, I always make sure my newborn sessions are family focused. Of course I get shots of just the baby, but documenting your new relationship as parents and your new routines is so important. Taking the time to slow down together and acknowledging this hard/amazing/wonderful/beautiful thing you are doing together is what makes in-home newborn sessions so sentimental.

I had the honour of photographing Miss Elise and her family in their home when she was about 1 month old. This session was actually purchased by Ron as a gift for Lauren when she was pregnant and when the time rolled around for the session I was so excited to finally meet their sweet baby girl! The grins on their faces were so sweet the whole time, and you can just see the adoration in their faces when they look at each other. That is what I’m talking about. You can practically see the love written on their foreheads as they hold their baby and think about how much their life has changed in a few short weeks.

People always tell me their house is dark and they don’t understand how I am going to photograph them in their home. I am here to tell you today that all you need is one decent window in one clean-ish room. Seriously, clean-ish is perfectly fine (You’ve just had a baby – please don’t worry about cleaning your house for me!). If we can find some furniture in a room with a window, we can make an in-home session happen. This entire session was shot in the same room, which had 2 windows that we used to create the different looks.

Audrey and I worked together for a few years at my previous job (although between various maternity leaves we only spent a few months in the building together), and I knew from the moment I met her that she was calm, and down to earth, and a wonderful mother to Soren. When she asked me to photograph their second son, Atlas, I was so honoured because we had had multiple conversations about photography and I knew she was someone who valued it. The walls in their home are covered in beautiful photographs of all of them, and I am so happy to know that some of these have joined them.

Like all in-home sessions they snuggled, they played, they laughed, Soren snacked, Atlas slept, and we had a great time. Thanks again Audrey and Cody for giving me the honour of documenting the addition of Atlas and the promotion of Soren. I can’t wait for our future sessions together <3.

Last winter I had the pleasure of meeting this wonderful little family in their home to welcome Miss Liv. She was so calm and observant for the whole session, and can you even handle all of that awesome hair?!

This in home newborn session went much like the rest: snuggles, diaper changes, snuggles, a nap, a change of scenery, and more snuggles. Both Alicia and Drew we so laid back and we had a great time catching up and swapping sleepless night stories. As always, thank you so much for inviting me into your home, it truly is a pleasure!

Of course it is August right now, but I have to say: is there anything better than snuggling a new baby and your pooch by the Christmas tree? Seriously, I remember when Archer was just a month old setting up the Christmas Tree and it was so dreamy to sit with him there in the day (and the night – so much of the night!) with the lights on and the snow falling.

I always have great time when I work with this family. Kyrah is an incredibly talented artist herself who makes custom wood signs and decor – check her out on Facebook – if you are in the Petrolia/Sarnia area you have to look her up.

A few months ago they welcomed a little baby sister to their mix. We spent a morning together jumping on the bed and snuggling, laughing and being goofy – my favourite way to hang out with clients! This set stands as one of my favourite in-home sessions to date, and even though I am a few months behind on sharing sessions, I am excited to finally share it with you all.
