In-home newborn sessions are becoming a bit of a specialty of mine. I absolutely love the slow pace, the easy conversation and the comfort of shooting in my clients home. It allows everyone the space and freedom to move around, take a break or play. The whole session is entirely family focused and led, meaning when baby needs to eat we take a break. Kids (and Dads) are generally more comfortable at home, which lets me get to know them better and photograph them at a deeper level. Plus, I love getting home tours by 4 year olds – don’t worry Moms, my basement is just as messy as yours!

Last summer I had the pleasure of photographing little Nate and his family in their home. The session was relaxed and fun, and it even included some of their favourite little poultry friends! I have been telling Eric no for years about getting chickens, but after seeing Ryan & Lyndsay’s yard I started to consider it. We haven’t taken the leap yet, but maybe this Spring..

Those first few weeks at home with a new baby, especially your first, are such a blur. You are trying to get to know your new baby and keep them happy and healthy, all while navigating a change in yourself and your relationship with your partner. Needless to say, it can be a stressful time. But what I love most about in-home newborn sessions is that you get the opportunity to slow down a bit and be together. Although the reason you booked the session is the arrival of the new baby, I always make sure my newborn sessions are family focused. Of course I get shots of just the baby, but documenting your new relationship as parents and your new routines is so important. Taking the time to slow down together and acknowledging this hard/amazing/wonderful/beautiful thing you are doing together is what makes in-home newborn sessions so sentimental.

I had the honour of photographing Miss Elise and her family in their home when she was about 1 month old. This session was actually purchased by Ron as a gift for Lauren when she was pregnant and when the time rolled around for the session I was so excited to finally meet their sweet baby girl! The grins on their faces were so sweet the whole time, and you can just see the adoration in their faces when they look at each other. That is what I’m talking about. You can practically see the love written on their foreheads as they hold their baby and think about how much their life has changed in a few short weeks.

Thank you so much Ron & Lauren for inviting me into your home. Elise was a dream and I truly hope these images continually serve as a reminder of your love and gratitude.

People always tell me their house is dark and they don’t understand how I am going to photograph them in their home. I am here to tell you today that all you need is one decent window in one clean-ish room. Seriously, clean-ish is perfectly fine (You’ve just had a baby – please don’t worry about cleaning your house for me!). If we can find some furniture in a room with a window, we can make an in-home session happen. This entire session was shot in the same room, which had 2 windows that we used to create the different looks.

Audrey and I worked together for a few years at my previous job (although between various maternity leaves we only spent a few months in the building together), and I knew from the moment I met her that she was calm, and down to earth, and a wonderful mother to Soren. When she asked me to photograph their second son, Atlas, I was so honoured because we had had multiple conversations about photography and I knew she was someone who valued it. The walls in their home are covered in beautiful photographs of all of them, and I am so happy to know that some of these have joined them.

Like all in-home sessions they snuggled, they played, they laughed, Soren snacked, Atlas slept, and we had a great time. Thanks again Audrey and Cody for giving me the honour of documenting the addition of Atlas and the promotion of Soren. I can’t wait for our future sessions together <3.

Last winter I had the pleasure of meeting this wonderful little family in their home to welcome Miss Liv. She was so calm and observant for the whole session, and can you even handle all of that awesome hair?!

This in home newborn session went much like the rest: snuggles, diaper changes, snuggles, a nap, a change of scenery, and more snuggles. Both Alicia and Drew we so laid back and we had a great time catching up and swapping sleepless night stories. As always, thank you so much for inviting me into your home, it truly is a pleasure!

Of course it is August right now, but I have to say: is there anything better than snuggling a new baby and your pooch by the Christmas tree? Seriously, I remember when Archer was just a month old setting up the Christmas Tree and it was so dreamy to sit with him there in the day (and the night – so much of the night!) with the lights on and the snow falling.

I always have great time when I work with this family. Kyrah is an incredibly talented artist herself who makes custom wood signs and decor – check her out on Facebook – if you are in the Petrolia/Sarnia area you have to look her up.

A few months ago they welcomed a little baby sister to their mix. We spent a morning together jumping on the bed and snuggling, laughing and being goofy – my favourite way to hang out with clients! This set stands as one of my favourite in-home sessions to date, and even though I am a few months behind on sharing sessions, I am excited to finally share it with you all.

Photographing newborns is something so special to me. With two babies of my own, I hazily remember those first few months with each boy – it is no joke that the sleep deprivation and general chaos makes for foggy memories. Babies change so much in their first few months of life, and those little newborn characteristics don’t stick around for very long. It is so important to make the effort to document them (and you!) in this phase of life, because if you’re anything like me, there isn’t enough coffee in the world to make you functional enough to remember every detail.

I am asked often about my approach to photographing newborns and what a session might look like with a first born, second, or a large family. Today I am going to talk a little about how I photograph newborns and families with newborns so you know exactly what to expect from your session with me.

I always document newborns in your home

The last thing I wanted to do the first few weeks after having my boys was to get all dressed up and out of the house at a scheduled time. Having our photographer come right to us was such a blessing, and that stress relief is exactly why I do the same for all of my clients.  Coming into your home to photograph your new family brings your session to a new level of comfort and adds a personal touch. It allows everyone to feel comfortable.  You know where everything is and you don’t have to pack a bag. And my personal favourite reason for photographing newborns at home:  you are in the environment you know and love, and where your relationship with your new baby is developing everyday.

I take things slow and steady

To build on my last point, being at home allows us to go slow and take as many breaks as you or baby needs. I generally schedule myself out for 2 hours to do a newborn session. I am not usually in your home that long, but it allows us lots of wiggle room in case baby has a blow out or is cluster feeding. Giving ourselves lots of time reduces the stress of a strict timeline. I encourage everyone to take lots of breaks if needed (especially when older siblings are involved), and I work slowly between rooms and activities to create a relaxed experience for everyone. The bonus of taking things slow is I get more opportunity to chat with my clients and to get to know you!

My newborn sessions are family focused

Yes I am there to document your baby, but my clients hire me because I have a family-focused approach. Your baby is surrounded by so much love and support that it is important to include that in the session. I always take images of your baby on their own, but the majority of my sessions are focused on you and your baby, your family as a whole, or the relationship between the new baby and their older siblings. Adding a new baby to any family is an exciting time for everyone and I want your images to reflect that.

I don’t pose newborns

I pride myself in keeping my newborns session as natural and comfortable as possible for everyone involved. We will always get shots of your baby on their own, but I usually get those shots as baby is put down by you in whatever position is comfortable for them. Usually these shots are on your bed, in the crib, or on a blanket you all love. I almost always have you lay them down in the position you normally would, and then I can move them slightly if needed. From here I can make sure to record all of the details that are so quickly gone from a newborn like spiky baby hair, dry skin or wrinkly baby feet (my personal favourite).

This sweet girl was born into one amazing family. Josh and Tawna are a great parenting team, and they are backed up by a full support system of family. I have had the pleasure of working with them in the past, and I am continually blown away by their love for one another. They laugh easily and know the true meaning of the little moments – my kind of people!

When they invited me into their home to photograph their new baby girl, I knew my job would be easy. And although Kaia’s two big brothers weren’t there for this session, I have seen some pretty amazing moments captured by Tawna of their relationship, and you know that kind of thing makes my heart sing!
