You’ve just booked your family photo session in Chatham-Kent & Sarnia, yay! But now you’re wondering: how do I get everyone on board without bribing them with 500 snacks? In order to ensure we have a smooth (and fun!) experience, it is important to prepare everyone in your family for what to expect. But don’t stress too much, my family sessions are very laid back and focused on movement and fun which creates a stress-free environment for everyone. Let’s dive into how to prepare your whole crew – including your spouse

1. Set Expectations Ahead of time (for Everyone!)
I am a firm believer in having a conversation or two before your session to give your children an idea of what to expect, and how excited you are. If your kids know what to expect, and also know that this is important to you, it will make it so much easier for everyone to relax and have fun. Let them know it will be fun, not stiff and posed! There will be lots of room for movement and games, snuggles and tickles. And possibly most importantly, talking to your spouse about how much this means to you, and that your attitude as parents will set the tone for the entire night is key to getting them on board. Invite your partner to have fun and relax during the session. Treat it like a date night for your family and everyone will benefit from the connection (and the photos, obviously!)

2. Keep it Low Pressure
I know it’s hard in the moment, but it is always best to avoid threatening or over-coaching your kids (ie. you better smile!). Encourage your kids to play and connect instead of looking straight for the camera. If you want genuine smiles from your kids, you have to create an opportunity for them to have fun. Sitting still and looking straight into my camera isn’t fun, and don’t I know it! Instead, talk and joke with your kids. Embrace the chaos and trust the photographer (me!) to guide the flow and capture the beauty that is always there!

3. Timing is Everything
I will always suggest golden hour (one hour before sunset) for your outdoor session, but I fully acknowledge that many families live by strict nap and sleep schedules which don’t allow for it. The best time of day for photos is always going to be when your child is most rested and fed. Factor in naps, meals and moods (especially for the little ones!) for a seamless photo session.

4. Bring Snacks – But Keep Them Clean!
Low mess snacks like fruit snacks and small crackers can be given to kids for a quick pick-me-up without us having to worry about stains or a messes. Avoid chocolate, juice boxes or anything sticky!
5. Dress for Comfort
I don’t know about you, but my kids HATE getting dressed up. I’m pretty sure my youngest has only worn jeans 5 times his entire life. My number one suggestion for picking outfits is to pick something comfortable and familiar. If you’re buying new clothes, have your children wear them at least once before the session. Kids are affected much more by uncomfortable clothing, but this goes for your spouse too! Everyone will be more relaxed if they are comfortable.

6. Let the Kids be Kids.
Kids move a lot. They don’t like to sit still, they get silly when contained, and they need frequent stimulation to stay engaged. But guess what? That’s all OK! If your kids are running around and being silly, that means they are having fun and are comfortable. These are all great signs of successful family session. I will capture all of those little quirks that make your family yours.

7. Trust the Process (Even if it Feels Like Chaos)
If I had a dollar for every time someone said “That was a disaster, how did you manage to get these beautiful pictures?” I’d be a very rich woman. People often perceive their children being silly or active as a disaster, when in reality that is where the best moments are. Embracing your child’s personality and meeting them where they are at will allow us to document real moments that are a true reflection of your family.

Remember, your family photo session is about CONNECTION, not perfection! The best galleries come from families who embrace the moment and are happy to spend time together. I promise that with a little preparation, everyone will have fun and love the images. If you need more proof, check out the incredible images from busy families just like yours.
