You Just Booked Your Family Session — Now What?

Family photography in Chatham-Kent, Sarnia-Lambton, and surrounding Ontario communities

Okay, it’s official — you’re on the calendar! That confirmation email just landed in your inbox, and maybe you’re feeling excited… or maybe you’re already thinking about what everyone’s going to wear and whether your toddler will cooperate for even five minutes.

Take a breath. That’s exactly what I’m here for.

This is a quick one, because honestly, you don’t need a giant checklist right now. You need to know what actually matters between now and session day — and what doesn’t.

First, Get Excited (Seriously)

Before we talk logistics, I want you to sit with this for a second: you just made space in your life to slow down and be together, on purpose, with no agenda except each other. That’s it. That’s the whole point.

The families who walk away loving their gallery most aren’t the ones with the perfectly coordinated outfits or the flawless location scout. They’re the ones who showed up ready to actually be present with their kids for an hour. So if you take one thing from this post, let it be that — the mood you bring matters more than anything on a checklist.

The Small Stuff: Location, Clothing, and Activity

I’m keeping this section short on purpose — these details matter, but they’re not what makes or breaks your session.

Location: Pick somewhere that feels like you. A favourite park, your backyard, a spot along the water in Chatham-Kent or Sarnia-Lambton. If you’re not sure, I’ve got a list of go-to spots and I’m always happy to help you land on the right one.

Clothing: Coordinate, don’t match. Pick a colour palette, mix textures, and make sure everyone (especially the kids) is actually comfortable moving around in what they’ve got on. Comfort beats “cute” every time — a squirmy kid in a scratchy outfit is not the vibe.

Activity (for storytelling sessions): If you booked a storytelling session, think of one small thing your family genuinely loves doing together — flying a kite, baking, chasing bubbles, reading a favourite book on the porch. It doesn’t need to be elaborate. The more natural it feels to your family, the better the photos will be.

What Actually Makes the Experience Great

This is the part I really want you to focus on, because it’s what turns a good session into a great one.

Feed and water everyone beforehand. A hungry toddler is a session’s biggest obstacle, full stop. Snack right up until we start, and if it’s a longer or more active session, pack a water bottle or two to have on hand.

Pick a location with a little something fun in it. A tire swing, a creek to skip rocks in, a hill to run down — anything that gives dad (or whichever parent tends to hover at the edges) a natural way to jump in and play instead of standing around waiting to be told what to do. The best photos happen when everyone’s actually engaged, not posed.

Choose a time that lets you settle in, not scramble in. Give yourselves extra buffer before we start — enough time to park, get shoes on, and take a breath before the camera comes out. Arriving rushed and frazzled shows up in the first twenty minutes of a session every time. Arriving a little early with time to spare sets the whole tone.

That’s Genuinely It

You don’t need a Pinterest board or a color-matched wardrobe spreadsheet. You need snacks, a spot with a little fun built in, and enough time to arrive unrushed. Everything else, we’ll figure out together.

If any questions come up before session day, send me a text or email anytime – my number’s in your inbox!

Can’t wait to spend this time with your family.
