When I suggest an in-home family session, I can usually see the panic flash across a parent’s face before they say a word.
My house? The one with the laundry pile that’s been “almost folded” since Tuesday? The one with Lego embedded in the carpet?
I get it. A park feels safer. Whether it’s a lakeside spot here in Chatham-Kent or a golden-hour walk through Canatara Park in Sarnia, it’s pretty, it’s neutral, and nobody’s going to judge the state of your kitchen counter. And park sessions are lovely — I’m not here to talk you out of them.
But as a family photographer working across Chatham-Kent and Sarnia-Lambton, I can tell you there’s a whole side of your family’s story that just doesn’t exist anywhere but home. If you’ve ever wondered whether an in-home session is worth it, I want to show you what you’d be getting that a park simply can’t give you.

The everyday moments that only happen at home
One of my favourite things about in-home family session are getting to see the little things that you will one day miss. Something most families don’t even think of as “a moment”, like how your toddler likes to ride their trike between the kitchen, dining room and living room or the pre-nap ritual.
The bottle and the snuggle on the couch. The same three books read in the rocking chair, in the same order, every single day. The little hand reaching up to touch mom’s face as eyes get heavy.
These are the sacred, ordinary things your family does together every day — so often that you stop seeing them. And they’re exactly the things you’ll ache to remember in ten years, when the rocking chair is in the basement and your baby is taller than you.
You can’t recreate that at a park. You can’t pack up the nursery and the rocking chair and the bedtime routine and haul it out to a field. It lives at home, whether that’s a farmhouse outside Blenheim or a bungalow in Bright’s Grove, so that’s where we go to capture it.

Kids (and Dads) relax faster at home
Here’s what happens at a park: we arrive somewhere new, and your kids spend the first chunk of our time figuring out where they are. There’s a dog over there. There’s a playground over there. Who is this lady with the camera?
At home, none of that exists. Kids feel safe in their own space, so they warm up to me so much faster. And once they’re comfortable, they do what they always do at home — they snuggle, they run laps through the hallway, they drag out their favourite toy to show me. That’s the real them, and that’s what I want in your photos.
And honestly? Dads feel the difference too. A lot of partners find photo sessions a little performative, standing in a field, being told where to put their hands. At home, they’re just… home. On their own couch, in their own kitchen, wrestling with their own kids. The stiffness disappears and you get photos of the dad your kids actually know.

Your home has better light than you think
When I walk into a home, I’m not looking at your décor. I’m looking for light and texture.
The bookshelf with years of stories (literally) stacked on it. The window that floods the living room with soft afternoon light. The sunny kitchen where everyone ends up gathering whether there’s food or not.
Those spaces have character a park bench can’t match — and they’re yours. When you look back at these photos, you won’t just see your family. You’ll see the kitchen where you made a thousand school lunches and the window your toddler used to press their face against (bonus points if we let him do it during the session).

“But my house is a mess”
This is the number one worry I hear from families booking an in-home session, so let’s talk about it.
Here’s the truth: as long as there’s good light, I can make almost anything work.
Before your session, we’ll chat through your home together and figure out which spaces we’ll actually use. That way you know exactly where to tidy — and, just as importantly, where you can skip it entirely. No deep-cleaning the whole house. No stress about the basement nobody’s going to see.
And on the day? If something’s in the way, I’ll move it. If a pile of toys sneaks into the frame, I’ll tidy as I go. No sweat, no judgment. I’ve photographed families in homes all over Chatham-Kent and Sarnia-Lambton, and I promise yours is not the messiest one I’ve walked into.
What matters is your people. The rest is just background.
