Why Imperfect Photos Are Outperforming Polished Brand Images Right Now (And How to Use Both)

There’s a shift happening in the world of brand photography — and if you’ve been scrolling Instagram lately, you’ve probably already felt it. The perfectly lit, perfectly posed, everything-is-fine headshot? It’s losing its grip. In its place: real moments, genuine expressions, and photos that actually look like a person runs the business.

But here’s what I want you to know before you throw your polished photos out the window: you still need both. The key is knowing when to use each one — and how to show up in your session so you can actually walk away with both.

What “Polished” Brand Photos Are For

Polished, professionally composed images still have a very important job. These are your:

  • Website hero images — the first thing someone sees when they land on your homepage
  • Media kit and press features — where you need to look credible and put-together
  • Professional headshots — LinkedIn, speaker bios, collaboration announcements
  • Printed materials — business cards, brochures, signage

These photos say I know what I’m doing. They establish trust before someone has even read a single word on your website. For your potential client who’s deciding whether to book you, a strong, polished image on your About page can be the difference between a yes and a click away.

So no — we’re not skipping these. They’re foundational.

What Candid, Authentic Photos Are For

This is where the magic is happening right now. Candid brand photos are the ones that look like someone caught you mid-laugh, mid-thought, or mid-service.They show personality, and personality is what makes someone connect with you and choose you over a competitor with the same price and the same service.

These are your:

  • Instagram and Facebook evergreen content — especially Reels covers and carousel posts
  • Email marketing — a photo of you that feels like a peek behind the scenes builds connection fast
  • Stories and “meet the face behind the brand” content
  • Blog posts — images that feel human and warm rather than stock-photo-stiff-office vibes
  • Google Business Profile posts — you being you: local, and recognizable

The goal of these images is to answer the question your potential client is quietly asking: Do I like her? Can I trust her? Does she get me? Authenticity answers all three.

Why Personality During Your Session Is Everything

Here’s the thing about candid photos — they can’t be faked. You can’t plan a genuine laugh. You can’t manufacture relaxed body language if you’re stiff and self-conscious. This is why what happens before and during your brand session matters just as much as the locations and outfits you choose.

When we work together, a big part of my job is creating an environment where you actually feel like yourself. That means:

Before your session: We’ll talk through what your brand feels like, not just what it looks like. What do you want people to feel when they scroll past your photo? Warmth? Confidence? A little humour? That direction shapes everything — the poses, the prompts, the pace of the day. Some people might say that I’m an over-planner, but in reality, that over planning is what helps us relax into it on the day of the shoot instead of flying by the seat of our pants. We know what we are getting, and why, so we can have some fun.

During your session: I use a lot of movement, conversation, and in-between moments to capture the shots that don’t look like shots. The best photos usually happen when you’re adjusting your coffee cup, looking out a window, or genuinely cracking up at something. We work with models, and get into character. I ask you to walk me through what you typically do when you work with a client. We play music you love and that hypes you up. We plan around those moments so there’s space for them to happen.

The more personality you bring, the more content you leave with. It really is that simple.

How to Incorporate Both Types Into Your Content Strategy

So you’ve got your gallery back. Now what?

Think of your polished photos as your credibility anchors — they live on your website, your email signature, your LinkedIn. They don’t need to be refreshed constantly, but they should feel current (aim to update them once a year or after a significant rebrand).

Your candid photos are your connection currency — they’re what keeps your social media feeling alive and personal without you having to be on camera every single day. A strong brand session can realistically give you 3–6 months of content when you use them strategically:

  • Rotate candid images across Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest
  • Pair a behind-the-scenes photo with a client story in your next email
  • Use a warm, authentic image on your Google Business Profile with a post about what it’s like to work with you
  • Pull a candid shot into your next blog post header so when people read your story, they can picture you there.

The businesses that are winning online right now aren’t just posting pretty photos. They’re posting themselves — consistently, warmly, and with intention.
